{"id":157,"date":"2016-07-09T15:18:07","date_gmt":"2016-07-09T15:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/?page_id=157"},"modified":"2016-11-24T21:24:29","modified_gmt":"2016-11-24T21:24:29","slug":"lrps","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oldthings.co.uk\/index.php\/lrps\/","title":{"rendered":"LRPS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was awarded the LRPS distinction (Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society) in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few ways of achieving this award, but the most common is to submit a &#8216;panel&#8217; of 10 prints. The panel must be arranged (hung) in a pleasing way &#8211; in effect this arrangement is an 11th picture.<\/p>\n<p>I chose 10&#8243; x 8&#8243; prints, in larger white card mounts. \u00a0The prints look a little better than these digital images.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The Panel<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_172\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-172\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Panel.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-172\" src=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Panel-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"LRPS Panel\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-172\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LRPS Panel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You are allowed to display your pictures in two or three rows. \u00a0I thought that this arrangement was pleasing, and it allowed me to display my mixture of portrait and landscape formats.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Redhead<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/01.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-162\" src=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/01-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Red Head\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Red Head<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It seemed like a good idea to have a stand-out portrait by itself in the top-centre. \u00a0I&#8217;m pleased with the lighting, and especially with the pose, which took some working out.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Pitts Special<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_163\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-163\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/02.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-163\" src=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/02-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Pitts Special\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pitts Special<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been interested in aviation photography since I became a &#8216;serious&#8217; photographer in 2012, so initially my panel was full of planes. \u00a0However, for various reasons (mainly balance) I ended up with just one. \u00a0The prop-blur and the &#8216;smoke&#8217; trails give the picture a sense of movement<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Cotswolds<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_164\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-164\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/03.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-164\" src=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/03-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cotswolds\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-164\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cotswolds<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some may dismiss this a &#8216;Chocolate box&#8217; picture &#8211; so what? \u00a0I like the composure, and it&#8217;s a very pleasant photo &#8211; nice colours, good light etc.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Chardin<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_165\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-165\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/04.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-165\" src=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/04-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Chardin Still Life\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-165\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chardin Still Life<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jean-Baptiste-Sim\u00e9on Chardin was a master painter of still-life subjects. \u00a0This is my attempt to reproduce such a painting, \u00a0with lot of care taken to get the composition, lighting and background right &#8211; and a little help from software. \u00a0This was one of my reserves at the\u00a0advisory day &#8211; and the advice I got was to include it in my panel! \u00a0I think that the colour palette agrees with that of the Redhead above it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Signpost<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_166\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-166\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/05.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-166\" src=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/05-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Signpost\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Signpost<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is a simple image, but has plenty to involve the viewer.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Flat out<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_167\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-167\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/06.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-167\" src=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/06-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Racing Motorcycle\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Racing Motorcycle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A nice coloured motorcycle, with what I think is good panning. \u00a0This image nicely balance the Pitts special, both moving in to the panel.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Moored boat<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_168\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-168\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/07.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-7\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-168\" src=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/07-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Moored Boat\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Moored Boat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You can&#8217;t go wrong with images of wooden boats &#8211; either they are characterful wrecks, or colourful and attention-grabbing like this one. \u00a0I got my feet wet getting the shot, but it was worth it!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Art Nude<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_169\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-169\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/08.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-8\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-169\" src=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/08-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Art Nude\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-169\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Art Nude<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always liked monochrome images &#8211; sometimes colour can detract. \u00a0I love the subtle tone in this image. \u00a0Another point of the image was to add a little variety to the panel.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>A Superior Motorcycle<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_170\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-170\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/09.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-9\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-170\" src=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/09-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Brough Superior\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-170\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brough Superior<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This image is a pair with the Art Nude study. \u00a0Where the Art Nude has nice subtle tones, this image is much harder. \u00a0The two are linked by the &#8216;V&#8217; shapes seen in both &#8211; this image was actually the inspiration for the model&#8217;s pose in the Art Nude.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>A Windy Day<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_171\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-171\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/10.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-10\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-171\" src=\"https:\/\/testaccount-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/10-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"A Windy Day\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-171\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Windy Day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is earliest image in the panel &#8211; it was something I&#8217;ve wanted to have a go at for some time. \u00a0Getting the blur on the turbine blades required some ND filters &#8211; happily the people in the image were walking slowly, and directly away from the camera, so they aren&#8217;t noticeably blurred. \u00a0I wanted to\u00a0contrast \/ compare this image with the prop blur on the Pitts Special.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Coming soon&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>Well, not very soon at all really. \u00a0I&#8217;m starting to think seriously about the ARPS distinction. \u00a0I&#8217;ve got the inspiration, all I need is some decent snaps! \u00a0Watch this space.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was awarded the LRPS distinction (Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society) in 2015.
